Veronica Mars 3.02: My Big Fat Greek Rush Week

In many ways, My Big Fat Greek Rush Week is a lot more successful in transitioning the show into its new locale than Welcome Wagon. There was a lot more meat to it and there was less time dedicated to standard introductions and passive plots. Maybe season 3 isn’t so bad, after all.

Filled with all the mockery you’d expect from Veronica given the bizarre situation she finds herself in, the investigation into a potentially shady sorority quickly evolves into an emotional and affecting story of the bond between all of the sisters. Veronica once again faces the idea of uncovering something that she wished she hadn’t when her article ends up ruining the life of their den mother.

Wallace and Logan may have been unaware of the darker background that will come to light about their prison/guard experiment, but it was fascinating to watch it work its way out here. For the second time Wallace and Logan pair up nicely, and I got a kick out of watching them out-wit each other. Wallace winning out is almost like the underdog succeeding, especially given how easy Logan has gotten himself through jams like this one.

The father/daughter thing is still a major part of the series, and seeing Veronica comfort Keith after he realises what his meddling has done made me realize that it’s something the series never forgets, even up until the last second of the finale. Their bond is so strong that it bears screen-time and constant reiteration since it’s always been at the core of the series basic premise; when the chips are down Veronica will always support her father, no matter what the circumstances.

It's still strange seeing the show work in such a different context, but this episode made it work a lot more than Welcome Wagon did. The rapist plot was introduced well, the stand-alone case was solid and the character work was just as good as it's ever been. I know this won't last, but it's reassuring that season 3 isn't total pants, at least not right away.

8/10
