Veronica Mars 3.19: Weevil's Wobble

OK, so maybe I’ve been a little harsh for the past few reviews. This stand-alone thing actually worked rather well this episode, with that trademark snarkiness coming out in spades. The show’s unjust cancellation means that some of the interesting plots started during the next two episodes don’t see an ending or further exploration, but take ‘Weevil’s Wobble’ out of that context, and it works really well.

It’s nice to see characters like Weevil and Wallace finally step back into the spotlight after spending the majority of the season interjecting with a few filler lines here and there. It felt like old times when Weevil asked Veronica to help clear his name. Most of the cases the series presented were fantastic, but some of my favourites were the ones in which she displayed the most humour and downright cheekiness throughout.

I guess without that bad-boy thing the writers were struggling with what to do with Weevil, hence why Veronica has to clear his name AGAIN, so they decided to see him revert back to his old ways when he was presented with an all-too-tempting offer to take rich college kids for all they’re worth.

Despite a brief line or two in the finale, this is pretty much the last we see of Mr Navarro. He’s always been a favourite of mine, representing one of the many different social classes that Neptune has to offer, and in the first two seasons he played a vital role in some of the series more important plots.

It would have been nice to see where a fourth season could have taken him, whether it be down the hinted route, or maybe somewhere unexpected but no matter where he ended up, he was a core character throughout the three seasons this series had, and I’d have missed him if he was dropped completley.

Dick’s unravelling, and like I said in the ‘I’ll Know What You’ll Do Next Summer’ review, never got enough time to develop properly, but this episode continued with it for another while, with him confronting Mac for the first time since ‘Welcome Wagon'.

In a way, it’s almost a small way of making peace with his part in Cassidy’s torment, and considering his outright distaste for his father, Mac was only other person with a close enough tie with Beaver to hear and accept his apology. Of course it’s Dick we’re talking about, so he had to do something douchebagy like hit on her to make it a less serious moment than it was, but that’s something the series always got right; staying true to its characters.

Obviously the sex tape’s fallout is explored better in the finale, but this episode set-up the next episodes inquisition and drama with a well-directed confrontation between Logan and Piz, which really puts Logan in the dog-house with all those around him. Why can’t that boy keep his fists to himself?

Again, ‘Weevil’s Wobble’ is a great episode, if only there was more than one left until it’s all over :(.

8/10
